Music
My music lessons are
personally tailored to each student. My mission is to take you from
where you are and help you get where you want to be. Below are some
general lesson guidelines, so don't worry if you don't have many
concrete goals yet. My students cover a lot of material in every
lesson and have a lot of fun doing it. In case you want to see a
list of artists whose songs I already know how to play and teach,
please click here.
Electric and Acoustic
Guitar
Beginning guitar students
will learn the basics like chords, strumming, timing and songs. Some students will
want to focus more on lead and others will prefer rhythm guitar. More advanced students
will learn how to read and play tabs,
improvise, write and compose
music, use alternate tunings, etc. Feel free to bring songs
you want to learn or we have plenty of great, popular songs already
tabbed. Plus, we can always find and teach you a song during your
lesson if inspiration strikes.
An important part of playing
an instrument is being able to improvise and create music. Please
click the following link to see a book I wrote called
Improvising Made
Easy For Guitar and Bass.
Learning songs by other musicians is great and there will always be
a place for it, but growing musicians often want to write and play original music,
too. The songs below are some of my originals. During
guitar lessons, students will have some time to jam freely (I mean learn how to
create and play
original music such as this).
Noodles
Arianna
Open G Jam
Cut Away
Together
Pancakes
Just Love
Movin'
God Bless America
Bass
Bass guitar students will focus on playing
notes at different speeds (e.g. eighth, quarter, half and whole
notes), the four main techniques of lead guitar, how to play in good timing,
improvisational techniques, solos, fills, etc. More advanced students will learn
songs and licks from bass tabs, improvisational techniques and much
more.
Keyboard
My keyboard students go through Alfred's
Basic Piano Library Books. They have many different levels and
after we assess your skills, I'll suggest a level and we'll use their
Lesson and Theory books. I'll supplement these exciting books with
extra songs, handouts and music sheets. I'm also happy to teach you
songs that you bring to the lessons. Additionally, keyboard students
will learn how to play by ear and improvise in any key. These
techniques will also help you write music.
Drums
Drums students will focus on timing, rolls
and rudiments. You will learn to read and play drum tabs and you'll learn to use all the
different drums and cymbals. More advanced students will learn
to play drums while being accompanied with
my bass, electric or acoustic guitar and keyboard. These exercises
will help you with your rhythm and
timing and prepare you to play with other musicians.
Drums students must provide their own drum
set at their home. You also need to live within 10 miles of
Pacific Beach and pay a $5 travel fee.
